The charges against a woman suspected of driving under the influence when she stuck and killed a bicyclist in August have been elevated to manslaughter.

50-year-old Carolyn Siegmeister was already on probation for a previous DUI arrest that the time of the accident. As such, she was additionally charged with a license restriction violation. Siegmeister will be held in lieu of $76,000 bond or placed on house arrest, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Siegmeister was driving a large Lincoln SUV when she drove onto the shoulder of South Shore Boulevard. She told officers she was going to get gas and cigarettes at the time, but she instead collided with a bicyclist on the shoulder.

That cyclist, Arnaldo Valdez, was thrown up over the car and eventually landed on the sidewalk. He died at the scene of the accident.

When officers responded, they noted Siegmeister showed signs of intoxication. She told the police she had ingested prescription medications including Xanax, Hydrocodone and Oxycodone. These medications can cause extreme fatigue and loss of awareness while driving.

Siegmeister's blood tests showed positive for the substances and alcohol. The manslaughter charge is a second degree felony punishable with up to 25 years in jail.
