How common is the crime of drunk driving in Wisconsin?
Surveys about Wisconsin drunk driving
According to surveys, Wisconsin has the highest rate of drunk driving in the nation. In fact, according to a US DHS survey about DUI, more than one quarter of the adult population of WI admitted that they drove drunk in the last year alone. This number is staggering because many people do not admit, or eve know, that they have driven under the influence or in violation of Wisconsin's OWI laws.
Facts about Wisconsin OWI and DUI Charges
According to the latest statistics available, which were from 2007, in excess of 42,000 people were convicted of a DUI in Wisconsin. Out of an estimated 5.6 million residents of the state, that is one in every 133 people convicted of a Wisconsin DUI... and that's just in 2007. Although that is less than one percent of the population, the number is still huge, given that most people who drive under the influence don't get caught in any given year.
