Rhode Island Ignition Interlocks In DUI/DWI Cases

In some circumstances, drivers who wish to restore their driving privileges after being convicted of a DUI will be required to use an ignition interlock device. This device is designed to prevent the driver from starting the vehicle unless they can provide a sober sample of their breath to the device. The device is attached to the driver's ignition system and keeps a log of attempts to start the vehicle as well as the user's BAC, and any attempts to bypass the device. In Rhode Island, if a driver is required to use an interlock device, they must use it on every vehicle they operate within the state.

When interlock devices are required in Rhode Island:

Any driver who is convicted of a DUI for at least the second time in five years may be required to install an interlock device on every vehicle he or she operates and use it for up to 2 years.
