Before a driver's license to drive in North Dakota is restored after being convicted of a DUI, a court may require the driver to rent and install an ignition interlock device. These devices are designed to prevent the driver from starting a vehicle unless they can provide a sober sample of their breath to the device. The device is attached to the driver's ignition system and keeps a log of attempts to start the vehicle as well as the user's BAC, and any attempts to bypass the device.
When interlock devices can be required in ND:
If a driver is convicted of driving under the influence and has been convicted of at least 1 DUI within the last 5 years, the judge may require that driver to install an interlock device for as long as the court deems necessary.
