Jeff Baker stepped down as Morrow’s police chief late Thursday afternoon, just a few days before he was slated to meet with the town’s city manager, Jeff Eady. Speculation was that the purpose of that meeting was for Baker to be fired for his DUI arrest two weeks ago. Baker emailed his resignation letter to Eady, before delivering a printed copy of the letter to city officials on Friday.

The former Morrow police chief was arrested last month by Clayton County police, after he was reportedly found asleep at the wheel of his government-owned vehicle. He was found by one of his own police officers, who also found several open containers of alcohol in Baker's vehicle.

The official police report noted that Baker’s eyes were red and glassy, his speech was slurred, and the smell of alcohol was present in Baker's vehicle. When Baker woke up, he allegedly put his car in reverse and drove directly to the Morrow Police Department.

Baker still faces several criminal charges related to his arrest. The former police chief has been charged with DUI, running a red light, impeding traffic, open container, driving too fast for conditions, improper lane change and failure to obey a person directing traffic.
