After months of investigation into the process of routinely allowing plea bargaining in St. Louis area DUI cases, many jurisdictions are now changing their policies.

State's Attorney Bob Haida is initiating a host of changes after discovering at least one assistant prosecutor did not follow protocol in allowing the routine plea bargains to occur. In specific, Haida is concerned that many DUI suspects who failed or refused a breath test were permitted to plead guilty to DUI but still keep their license after a small fine. The license suspensions were supposed to be mandatory and non-negotiable.

In addition to ensuring the mandatory suspensions are not tossed out in a plea bargain, Haida is restructuring the way DUI cases are handled. In a ltter to the Belleville News Democrat, Haida confirmed he will be placing more experienced prosecutors on DUI cases and reviewing prosecutions periodically.

Haida additionally confirmed that one prosecutor in particular, who he did not name, resigned in connection with these events.
