Decatur police have confirmed Illinois State Representative Ron Stephens, R-Greenville, was arrested Monday on suspicion of DUI.

The arrest came when police spotted the driver in a lane violation, crossing over the center line, around 8PM Monday. He was cited for improper lane use, and he provided a breath test sample of .101%, slightly over the legal limit of .08%. The 62-year-old Representative has served in the state legislature for every year but two since 1986.

Stephens posted a nominal $100 bond and will be back in court to settle the charges on April 15. He issued a statement saying:

"Early on Monday Evening, I was stopped by the police and received citations for improper lane usage and driving under the influence. I cooperated fully with the police officers, was ticketed and released later that evening. I exercised poor judgement that evening, and I am truly sorry for my actions. I also regret having disappointed by family, friends and those I represent. I take full responsibility and stand ready to face the consequences of my actions."

Stephens has been in trouble with the law once previously, according to the Herald Review, for using controlled substances. He is a licensed pharmacist.
