Two Memphis-area police officers both face DUI charges after the holiday weekend - they were arrested less than 24 hours apart.
One deputy from the Shelby County police department and on police Major from Memphis have cause their departments a host of public relations headaches leading up to the St. Patrick's Day Holiday - a police DUI crackdown. Deputy Marc Smith was charged with public intoxication, reckless driving and DUI. Major Jeffery Polk was also charged with reckless driving and DUI. The arrests both came as the departments were stepping up patrols heading into the holiday.
Smith was arrested Friday when he hit a parked car traveling over 30 mph near 4:00AM. He provided a breath test sample showing his BAC to be .16%, enough for aggravated charges, and additionally appeared severely intoxicated, even falling asleep during the process of the arrest according to WAFB. Smith may be temporarily suspended or permanently fired as a result of the arrest.
The second arrest occurred when Polk was stopped around 4:00AM the next morning at an intersection for reckless driving. He had been with the department since 1986, but he was relieved of duty as the investigation continues.
This weekend and throughout this week, officers will be campaigning for safe driving habits on a heavy-drinking holiday. In particular, today, St. Patrick's Day, will be the focus of a number of DUI checkpoints. The public does a lot of grumbling when DUI enforcements pick up pace. The fact this enforcement also involved the arrest of two officers will likely lead to a large amount of criticism from driver's who see the police efforts as hypocritical.
