A man arrested under suspicion of DWI in Genesee County, Michigan, died suddenly while being transported in the back of a patrol car.
47-year-old Richard Fox was pronounced dead only about an hour after he was placed under arrest. Police located Fox after an anonymous tip that the driver had been drinking prior to getting behind the wheel of his car. When police arrived, Fox had parked his vehicle and was inside the home.
At that point, police began questioning Fox, and they subjected him to a series of field tests, which he allegedly failed. He was placed under arrest for DWI at 6:30PM and became unresponsive in the police vehicle around 7:30PM. The police report indicated Fox was uncooperative during the arrest procedure.
Fox requested to speak with his wife prior to being taken to jail; the request was granted. Shortly after he said goodbye to his wife, Fox began showing signs of medical emergency. Deputies immediately removed him from the vehicle and implemented CPR. Firefighters arrived at the scene to transport Fox to a local hospital, but he never responded to the CPR and was dead before he reached the medical center.
An investigation into the cause of death is forthcoming. There have been no official comments or accusations of malpractice, but an internal investigation will closely review police procedures to make sure the offender's safety was attended to during the arrest.
