A Raleigh woman has been charged with felony death by vehicle in connection with a fatal accident on Saturday morning.

Police suspect Manuela Mantanona Gomez was under the influence when she struck a parked car around 5 AM in North Raleigh. The back seat passenger of that small Toyota, 24-year-old John Sullivan, died in the accident. The Toyota was stopped in the southbound lane of Six Forks Road when Gomez struck the vehicle, sending it nearly 200 feet from the impact of the collision. Police suspect Gomez was traveling nearly 50 mph from evidence at the scene.

Gomez was also severely injured in the crash. She was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, and is being treated at a local hospital for those injuries. Tow other occupants of the Toyota were not seriously injured. Sullivan was crushed by impact in the back seat, leading to his death at the scene.

If Gomez is found guilty, she will face extended jail time as a result of the felony charge. North Carolina does have a statute providing for a more severe murder charge, but Gomez was charged with the death by vehicle potion of the statute, still a Class G felony.
