Gov. Bob McDonnell is expected to sign a bill that would tighten laws for underage drivers convicted of DUI in the state of Virginia more than one time.

The law would punish drivers who have two or more DUI convictions under the age of 18. They would see a revocation of their drivers licenses and an impounding of their vehicles. The legislation is only one of four bills being considered to crack down on underage drinking. All four passed the General Assembly and will go to the Governor for passage this week.

A second bill would further restrict a conditional drivers license for an underage person; the individual could no longer drive to school. Right now, restricted licenses still allow an underage person to drive to and from school.

While the underage driver bills did pass, a bill to enforce a mandatory ignition interlock requirement  for first-time offenders was shut down in the Assembly. The bill would have applied to offenders with a BAC of .1% or higher, which is lower than the .16% aggravated BAC level in most states. At first, the bill was going to cover all drivers; the last minute change to the .1% level may have caused some confusion with the bill.
