The California Highway Patrol arrested a 24-year-old driver under suspicion of DUI in an accident that seriously injured a pregnant woman and her 8-month-old daughter.
21-year-old Carron Boyd, the victim, remained in critical condition throughout the weekend following the accident. Her daughter, Allesandrya, also suffered major head injuries. Both parties were air lifted to local hospitals, and their condition remains unstable.
The crash shut down Mark West Springs Road for over three hours around 6:30PM on Tuesday, March 3. The suspect, Faustino Vega-Xicohtencatl appeared to be extremely intoxicated, according to arrest reports. He attempted to tell officers he had allowed a hitch hiker to drive his car, and the hitch hiker was responsible for the accident before fleeing on foot.
Vega-Xicohtencatl's story was investigated for accuracy but could not be corroborated, and he was eventually arrested in connection with the accident. A witness at the scene identified him as a driver she had witnessed driving dangerously just before the accident occurred. Vega-Xicohtencatl allegedly crossed the center line around a curve, and Boyd hit him head-on. Her much smaller car sustained the majority of the damage.
A second car behind Boyd was also involved in the accident, but the driver was thankfully uninjured. Boyd's four-month-old fetus survived the accident. The baby's father was traveling in the car and was also hurt but released with only moderate injuries.
Vega-Xicohtencatl is held in Sonoma County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bail. Police will likely wait until the condition of the woman and child has stabilized to issue further charges. If the victims suffer permanent disability, dismemberment or death, the charges against Vega-Xicohtencatl will reflect the severity of their injuries.
