One Virginia Beach teenager remains in jail today after a wreck this week that took the life of another 16-year-old high school athlete.
The identity of the victim has only now been confirmed as 16-year-old baseball star Joey Fonseca of Kempsville. He was the pitcher for Kempsville High School's baseball team. The accident occurred early Sunday morning when the driver, whose identity has not been released, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree.
The driver has been charged with DUi and involuntary manslaughter. Reports indicate he has not yet been released from Virginia Beach Juvenile Detention Center as the investigation moved forward and terms for bail were set. He was originally treated for injuries, but they were not severe.
Both Fonseca and the driver were allegedly leaving a party Saturday night when the crash occurred. Details about this party will likely be forthcoming as the investigation continues, but they have yet to be released as well. The high school and baseball team have been silenced in their despair according to reports.
A fund has been established to help cover the cost of funeral expenses. If you have a desire to contribute, the Joey Fonseca Memorial Fund accepts contributions at branches of RBC Bank.
