Though not directly responsible for the accident that caused the death of a three-year-old girl, a Kentucky driver may face charges in connection with a series of events leading to the death.
The chain reaction event occurred on I-64 in Franklin County around 1AM Friday morning. 26-year-old Laura Hubbard had been involved in a DUI accident earlier in the evening. Police were attempting to clear the scene, but traffic was stopped for some time.
Catherine Stults, 49, was driving through town in a tractor trailer when she came upon the accident scene. She could not stop her vehicle fast enough, and eventually slammed into a semi truck along the roadway. The driver of that truck was 45-year-old Timothy Williams. Williams and Stults both survived the accident.
One passenger in Stult's tractor trailer, her three-year-old granddaughter Andrea Witherspoon, did not survive the wreck. There was a second adult in the tractor-trailer's compartment asleep at the time of the accident. This passenger has yet to be identified but was also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.
It is unclear whether Stults was practicing safe driving at the time the accident occurred. Investigators will attempt to discover this as well as whether the roadway was properly secured after the first accident. Aggravated charges cannot be levied against Hubbard for the child's death, but the chain reaction of events was unfortunate for all drivers involved.
