Councilwoman Laura Nauser was not personally accused of DWI, but she was caught in a lie after publicly stating she was not with her husband during his DWI arrest.
Nauser's husband was stopped on New Year's Eve by a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer because his left headlight was not functioning on a large Hummer H2. During the arrest around 10PM, Gregory Nauser showed signs of impairment and was eventually booked on DWI charges.
Nauser, who is running for the House of Representatives in the state, told multiple news sources that the DWI was her husband's business, that she was not present and could not comment on the event. Authorities later confirmed Nauser was with her husband. She explained the discrepancy to the Columbia Daily Tribune, simply stating she had been caught off guard by the initial questioning.
Gregory Nauser is a public figure in his own right as owner of the Nauser Beverage distributing company located in Columbia. The company is a wholesale beer, ale and wine distributor in the area. In addition to his DWI arrest, Nauser faces charges of possession of a firearm while intoxicated. In Missouri, it is legal to carry concealed firearms in a vehicle if you are licensed to do so. However, carrying firearms while intoxicated is a serious offense.
Nauser allegedly told the officer about the weapon and the ammunition he was carrying prior to a search of the vehicle. He had a concealed weapon permit. Nauser's BAC was .142% at the time of his arrest. Officials will not issue any penalties against Laura Nauser, but the issue may harm her attempts to secure a seat in the legislature.
