Police in Western Nevada conducted a DUI checkpoint in Sparks, Nevada on Superbowl Sunday. The results may add fuel to those who claim that DUI roadblocks are an inefficient waste of taxpayer dollars and a publicity stunt.
This checkpoint screened almost 1,700 drivers. Of those 1,700, only four were arrested for DUI. About 50 others were cited for petty violations ranging from on seat belts to no insurance.
According to many sources, a lot more than 4 in 1,700 people are driving under the influence, especially after the Super Bowl. So the debate goes on about whether the approximate 1,650 people who were screened and waived through diverted valuable police resources away from catching other impaired drivers who either avoided the checkpoint or who just didn't happen through it.
