A Minnesota teen faces a tough homicide charge resulting from a crash last week that killed a passenger in her own vehicle, reportedly a friend.
Alicia Rae Haupert was officially charged Monday with criminal vehicular homicide. The victim was Andrea Barbara Simmerman, 20, also local to the Stillwater area. Haupert lost control of her car on Minnesota 95 around 8:30AM Friday, eventually rolling the vehicle over.
The investigation points to the fact Haupert may have hit black ice while traveling at a pace slightly over 50 mph. One passenger, Trisha Hughes, who owned the vehicle, suffered only minor injuries following the accident. All three women had reportedly been drinking the night before and were not restrained in the vehicle. Haupert told authorities she was drinking a mix of vodka and energy drinks until about 4AM before the crash occurred.
Haupert's BAC was relatively low, recorded at .108% after the accident. However, the legal limit for an underage person in the state of Minnesota is just .02%, meaning she was well over the threshold. Haupert had been sleeping form about 4AM until she left for work around 8AM, according to the police report. Unfortunately, this lapse in drinking was not enough to lower her BAC to a proper level for operating a vehicle.
Haupert has pleaded guilty to underage consumption in the past. Authorities are trying to determine where the young women got their liquor.
