Artie Lange: suicide attempt
The New York Post is finally reporting what is suspected to be the truth behind comedian Artie Lange’s hospitalization last Saturday.
Until now, the reason behind the hospitalization was not released to the public. Lang is most famous as a sidekick of Howard Stern. He was also one of the original cast members of MADtv.
The Post reports Lange stabbed himself at least nine times. HIs mother issued a 911 call for help when she found Lange bloodied and injured in his apartment. The report has been confirmed by sources close to Lange. Police suspect a few of the stabs were not nearly as deep, but they did report several severe wounds.
The only comment made by Howard Stern on his show this week was a reminder that Lange is a good man with a difficult addiction. Stern commented, “We all have our demons.” He was referring to Lange’s history of drug rehabilitation. Lange has told a famous story on Stern’s show repeatedly of how he used cocaine repeatedly in preparations to go on the MADtv set.
The cast and crew once attempted an intervention for Lange. He fled the studio, with has cast mates chasing after him, and Lange was eventually arrested in a supermarket. He entered counseling and rehabilitation following this incident, but he never recovered from addiction.
Years later, while serving on the Stern show, Lange was absent from several episodes and admitted heroin use was the cause. Lange eventually resigned from Stern’s show in April of 2008 after an on air argument. His final words were, “I’m not a good person. I gotta leave. I love you.”
Doctors have been able to stop Lange’s bleeding, and he is currently recovering. They did note his condition was severe when he was admitted.
