Hawaii - Big Island Video News.com is reporting that Hawaii will engage in a creative way to combat DUI deaths (and arrests) between no and New Year's Day.
On the Big Island of Hawaii last year, 19 of the 27 traffic related deaths involved alcohol in some form. So far this year, 50 percent of the fatalties have been linked to alcohol. Nationally, according the Big Island Video News, the rate is 40% and in Hawaii as a whole it is 47%.
In an effort to bring the numbers closer to the averages in other places and to save lives, certain establishments will be giving drunk patrons free taxi rides away from the bar.
In addition, Hawaii will be doing roadblocks and public service campaigns against drunk driving.
We will report on the success of this program once the numbers are in.
Earlier this month Bethany Henderson filled this report about Hawaii: Weekend jailtime for 14-time Hawaii DUI offender.
