Police officers in the Idaho state capitol are busy following Boise State University games according to high arrest statistics this year.

Police arrested 36 individuals for DUI alone after the BSU v. University of Idaho game last Saturday afternoon. The bulk of arrests came between 5PM and 4AM, when saturation patrols were looking for illegal behavior. In addition to the 36 DUI arrests, police arrested another 15 people for driving related and drinking related activities.

Add to this the 125 citations given for drinking in public, and you have a hefty amount of police activity following the game. However, this number still pales in comparison to the 164 tickets handed out after the BSU v. Oregon game in September.

Police around college campuses often use the tail-gating and party scene around football games as a way to look for impaired driving and alcohol offenses. This is particularly true when the games take place at stadiums not owned by the colleges. College-owned stadiums typically have stricter alcohol policies; most do not serve alcohol at the games.

However, privately owned stadiums hosting college football games may serve beverages. Police are not sure which method is safer. On the one hand, stadiums that do not serve alcohol tend to host more extensive tailgates where students over drink before the game. On the other, stadiums that serve alcohol have a hard time curbing underage drinking.

As an Alumni class of l977, I hear by suggest that the college offer game busing to the game and allow private parking with security checks for returning fans. If at that time all fans must pass a safety breath check point to pick up their vehicles. For those who do not pass the safety check zone, the fans will be taxied or bused to a respectable hotel with awaiting victory dinners and breakfast to stay one night. A visa credit card will automatically be charged for all expenses on one complete hotel night!

This is a healthy suggestion for BSU future activities.

I lived in Japan for 21years. The trains are the only means of transportation in Tokyo along with city taxis to be driven safely home. In the trains, people get to sleep it off and get off at the last station.

America does not offer solutions to public drinking events but sure is one of the our biggest economic revenue sales. In addition, automobiles are part of our American culture. Again, this only one idea, perhaps this problem can be discussed further by the student union parking students and alumni clubs to research ways on getting a handle for this problem drinking.
