First-time offenders in Jefferson County, Kentucky, have the chance to enter a DUI Diversion Program to prevent future mistakes.
According to local new source Wave 3 TV, the program is working remarkably well. Supporters say the program shows only about 1/100 individuals who goes through the program will be involved in a repeat offense. This is compared with about 1/7 on average for persons who do not participate.
The diversion program, which is run by the County Attorney, focuses on the human impact of the crime. There is a mandatory victim's impact panel. Here, victims of DUI-related accidents, police officers and other public officials talk about the pain they witness as a result of alcohol-related traffic accidents. Participants also visit the local morgue to see the destruction caused by negative decisions. These programs are used in other states as well, such as one similar program in Texas.
The DUI Diversion Program in Louisville and other Jefferson County cities received a publicity boost when well-known basketball coach Billy Gillispie decided to enter the program as part of his DUI plea deal. Gillispie is the former head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team and a public figure known for controversy.
