A Utah DUI suspect was tasered for attempting to escape arrest while handcuffed in the back of a moving police car.

The man was apprehended by the Utah Highway Patrol in the Salt Lake City area. He was traveling southbound down 1-15 Friday and pulled over on suspicion of DUI. When the UHP handcuffed him and placed him in the back of the squad car, he attempted to escape while the car was in motion.

The man was able to slip the handcuffs. He then tried to kick the back door of the squad car open. Officers dry-tasered the man to settle him. He was initially unconscious, but according to reports from local news station KSLTV, his vital signs remained strong throughout the process.

Dry tasering means that the electric current from a taser was used, but the darts were not deployed. A taser typically has two darts that can span a distance around 15 yards from the officer, or victim, to the suspect nor attacker.

As you can see from the image below, there is also an electric pulse that can be used like a simple stun gun. This option may be used after the darts have already been expelled to subdue a second person or may be used instead of the darts. This is the method used by the Utah police.

This is not the first time in recent months that an impaired driving suspect has been tasered. See, Police taser Florida DUI suspect.
