A woman from Milton, Florida, was sentenced to 25 years is a state prison after pleading no contest to a host of charges resulting from an April 4 accident in Santa Rosa County.

June Coriell pleaded no contest to 5 counts total: 2 counts DUI manslaughter, 2 counts DUI causing serious bodily injury and 1 count DUI property damage.

Coriell struck a car driven by James Dixon, who died at the scene of the crash. His passenger, Teresa Lunsford, was hospitalized but sadly died about a week later from complications following the accident. Two children riding in the car were harmed but survived. 7 and 8 years old, both sustained injuries. The 7 year old passenger was thrown out of the car.

When Corriel was tested at the scene, she was found to have a BAC of .108%. Corriel was 51 at the time of the accident. She pleaded no contest on September 22. Corriel faced up to 41 years in prison for all of the offenses.

The 25 year state prison sentence is on the heavier side, but it was likely reduced from the potential maximum due to Corriel's swift agreement to a no contest plea.

"These cases are tragic," said Florida DUI lawyer John Musca. "Nobody is ever the same. In this case, on the spectrum of alcohol tests I've seen, Ms. Coriell was actually very low. Keep in mind that the legal limit in most states use to be .10, and if it still was, at a .108 she would have been within the scientific margin of error for forensic alcohol testing."

Many feel that this sentence, although not the maximum, is skewed when compared to other cases. "How do you reconcile a 25 year prison sentence in this case with the sentence that Donte Stallworth received? The mental intent was exactly the same. The result here was just less lucky."

Although most people agree that Stallworth got off way too easy, it serves as a shining example of how unfair the legal system can truly be. See the following archived articles for background on Donte Stallworth's charges and sentence for killing Mario Reyes.

Here's the report of Stallworth being suspended for the season by the NFL:

According to the NFL commissioner, he "placed a stain on the NFL."

Below is an ESPN report on Stallwortth, including an interview with him. In the video, he seems regretful. He says he had 4 shots and didn't feel drunk at all. Yet he registered a .126 alcohol level, much higher than Corriel's (and he had marijuana in his system).

While few would argue that Stallworth's sentence was too harsh, Corriel is unlikely to find much sympathy from the general population.
