Utah police officer resigns following DUI

An officer in the Midvale Police Department resigned yesterday following public outcries over his alleged DUI accident.

The Officer, Sgt. John Salazar, drew more attention because he was in a squad car at the time of the crash. The car was totaled, and three other vehicles involved were heavily damaged. The Sgt. has enjoyed an otherwise honorable career, but he tendered his own resignation to a City Attorney following the scandal.

The attorney had nothing but positive things to say about Salazar, who has served the force for 13 years, according to local Deseret News.

The accident occurred Sunday around 1AM. Police received calls about a car involved in a hit-and-run of parked vehicles. The accident caused one car to hit another, and continuing on, so three cars in total sustained damage. The Dodge Charger reported was actually an unmarked police car.

There were no injuries from the accident. The resignation came as a surprise seeing as the officer was off-duty and no one was injured in the accident. Salazar’s personal disappointment seems to be the cause of the resignation as his superiors did not comment on the case or request his resignation.
