MADD announced nationwide cuts to programming in line with a recent drop in donations, and now the Delaware branch says it will have to shut down if funds do not arrive soon.
The Executive Director of the branch, Nancy Raynor, is reminding the community MADD is a donation-based non profit. If donations do not come in to support the local office, it will be shut down as early as October 31.
The Delaware office has been threatening to close, but it was able to delay thanks to the Georgetown Police Department's benefit ride. This event raised about $5,000 for the office. The office has an annual operating expense around $50,000, so the funds were only able to keep it open for a short time. Those funds go toward supporting victims, media campaigns, covering inquiries, recruiting members and providing education through speaking opportunities.
MADD is largely involved in lobbying activities across the country. However, the funds donated to MADD do not support political campaigns or agendas directly. Rather, the funds go toward mobilizing a community around a common issue such as requiring ignition interlock devices, increasing penalties for DUI enforcement and other hot topic items. MADD will not stop these activities locally, but the group will cease to maintain an office and will engage in less public activities.
