Believe it or not, you can face DWI penalties for driving your La-Z-Boy motorized lounge chair while under the influence.

When 62-year-old Dennis LeRoy Anderson hit a parked car on his motorized recliner, he did not likely expect the barrage of legal consequences that would follow. There were no injuries in the August 2008 accident, but Anderson pleaded guilty to serious DWI charges nonetheless.

A criminal complaint filed against the man said he was actually driving the lounge from one bar to another. His blood-alcohol was recorded at .29%. He said he was taking the chair from a bar to a lounge under complete control until a woman jumped on, throwing the chair off balance.

The chair itself was powered by a lawnmower engine. The vehicle was decked out with a cup holder, stereo and other custom details. The man was using a steering wheel to drive the recliner down the road. In Minnesota, any motor vehicle operation while intoxicated is not permitted under the law. This means a bicycle, boat, recreational vehicle and, yes, a lounge chair.

The chair was forfeited to police. Anderson was sentenced to 180 days in jail and fined $2,000. He will be monitored by electronic ankle bracelet for 30 days to ensure he is not drinking, and he will be on probation for 2 years. Worse, perhaps, is the fact Anderson has one prior DWI. He now has two such convictions on his record.
