A 27-year-old woman identified as Courtney Pickens was arrested in the parking lot of her daughter's school as she waited to drive the child home. An officer approached her car when he noticed her asleep behind the wheel.
Upon search of the vehicle, the officer found a glass pipe and pills which turned out to be Xanax. The woman was charged with drug possession in addition to her DWI. A family member came to pick up the child from Southside School in Batesville, Arkansas.
36 states have legislation that allows for increased penalties if a child is involved in a DWI. Arkansas provides for increased penalties for misdemeanor DWI if a child under 14 is in the car. There is no word yet regarding whether authorities will aim for increased penalties for the woman due to the fact she had intended on endangering a child or was on school property.
There will be increased sentencing for possession of the Xanax pills, apparently 6 total, one of which was crushed. While Xanax is typically ingested as anxiety medication, the presence of a pipe in the vehicle without other drugs present indicates the woman may have been smoking the prescription medication.
Smoking Xanax induces similar effects to ingesting the drug. However, the effects may be more intense. Likewise, ingesting or smoking Xanax in addition to drinking will intensify the effects of the drug and cause drowsiness and disorientation.
