Michigan DUI Ignition Interlock Devices

An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is a portable breath machine that attaches to the steering column of a DUI offender's car.  In order to start the vehicle's ignition, the driver must blow into the device and provide a sober breath sample (under .025). The device will also request the driver to provide random breath samples while the vehicle is in motion.  If a breath reading over .025 is registered while the vehicle is in motion, an alarm will sound and the device will lock to prevent further use.

Installation of an IID may be required as part of a DUI offender's probation, depending on the nature of the charges and the circumstances of the case.  Individuals with prior offenses will be required to install the device, typically for a period of one year.  In other cases, the judge has the discretion of whether to order installation of an IID.

The cost of installing the IID must be paid for by the defendant.  Monthly fees for maintaining the device also apply.  IID's must be installed on each vehicle the defendant owns and operates.  During the time of probation, the DUI offender is not permitted to operate a vehicle without an IID.  Michigan law makes it illegal to tamper with or attempt to circumvent an IID device. Test results over .025 and attempts to tamper with the device are misdemeanors, punishable by fine and possible imprisonment.
