Idaho Ignition Interlock Device Law

Upon conviction for a DUI in Idaho, certain offenders may be ordered to only drive a motor vehicle that has been equipped with an ignition interlock device for the duration of the offender's probation period.

What is an Ignition Interlock Device according to Idaho DUI Law?

According to Idaho's ignition interlock statute, an ignition interlock device (IID) is "breath alcohol analyzed ignition equipment..designed to prevent a motor vehicle from being operated by a person who has consumed an alcoholic beverage."

An IID is a handheld breath testing devices that attaches to the ignition system of a car. Persons must first blow into the IID in order to start the car's ignition. The court will order which calibration the IID is to be set at (typically .02). If a breath sample over the set limit is given, the device will prohibit the car's ignition from starting. Additional random breath samples will also be required while the car is in motion to prevent a sober friend from starting the vehicle. The IID will record and transmit all breath readings to the proper authorities. Breath samples over the prescribed limit, as well as attempts to tamper or circumvent the device, will result in the imposition of further penalties.

Where do I get an Idaho interlock, and how much will it cost?

IIDs are installed at designated installation centers. The DUI offender is responsible for all costs associated with installation and the monthly lease payments for the duration the device remains installed on the vehicle. Persons caught operating a vehicle that is not equipped with an IID will also incur further penalties.
