Hawaii Ignition Interlock Device Laws

Hawaii was one of the last five states to enact legislation requiring the installation of ignition interlock devices on vehicles driven by convicted DUI offenders. A new bill was recently signed into law that will require DUI offenders to install the device starting on July 1, 2010.

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a handheld breath testing device that attaches to the ignition system of a vehicle. The device prohibits a person from starting the vehicle without first blowing a "clean" breath sample (under .02) into the machine. The decision of whether persons convicted of a first offense DUI will be required to install the device is in the discretion of the judge.
