Expenses for experts in DUI cases
In addition to the cost of an attorney's services, handling a DUI case correctly may also involve expenses for hiring experts and consultants. The most common types of DUI experts and consultants are:
Scientific Experts: Often referred to as "forensic scientists" or "forensic chemists" these expert witnesses are often very effective at finding problems in the state's scientific evidence. A well trained forensic expert can look at the data from a breath test machine, or from a blood analysis, and spot potential issues that could impact your case.
Private Investigators: Some DUI / DWI lawyers use investigators extensively in working up cases. They can do everything from photograph and measure the scene of the stop, accident or field sobriety tests, to interviewing cab drivers, bartenders, medical and paramedic witnesses and police officers. In many ways, the use of a private investigator in a DUI case can create an advantage, since many investigators tend to be former police officers. Some DUI officers respond better to ex-cops than they do to lawyers, and will therefore be more open and honest with "one of their own."
Accident Reconstructionists: This type of professional can be invaluable when your DU case involves an accident.
Jury Consultants: Although rarely used in DWI cases, jury consultants can help tip the advantage towards the defense by helping the DUI lawyer select the most favorable jury possible. Jury consultants are expenseive, and in many low level misdmeanor DU cases, will not be given enough time to research the jury before it is time to pick the jury, so they may be of limited value.
