DUI Accident Reconstruction Experts

An accident reconstruction expert is a witness who uses a variety of tools and methods to piece together a story about how a DUI accident occurred by looking at a number of things.

This witness can be either police-employed or civilian, and may be called by the prosecution or the defense. Some cases come down to dueling and contradictory accounts of defense and prosecution reconstruction expert.

The tools that are currently available to these accident experts are truly amazing. Computers can actually generate a multi-dimensional model of what happened by combining images from multiple viewpoints, and piecing together pieces of scattered debris.

At a bare minimum, in it simplest form, reconstructing an accident involves measuring the scene with a tape measure of wheel, drawing a diagram of the scene, noting any debris and skid marks, and incorporating the statements of the drivers, passengers and bystander witnesses.

Complex accident reconstruction is extremely expensive, so it is rarely used in misdemeanor DUI cases, or even serious vehicular felonies, except when the defendant is extremely well funded. A complex analysis and reproduction can cost in the tens of thousands of dollars, but may well save years in prison in some cases.

If your DUI case involved an accident that you reasonably believe was not your fault, mention it to your DUI lawyer so that you can decide together whether it is in your best interest and budget to do a reconstruction.
