DC Ignition Interlock Law

Upon a conviction for a Washington DC DUI or DWI offense in, the court may require the defendant to install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) on every vehicle he/she owns and operates.

An IID is an ignition equipment designed to prevent a motor vehicle from being operated by a person whose blood alcohol level exceeds the calibrated setting on the device (usually .02). In order to start the vehicle's ignition, a clean breath sample must be blown into the device. Random additional breath tests will also be required periodically while the vehicle is in motion to prevent a sober friend from starting the vehicle. For safety reasons, the device will never immobilize a vehicle that is already in motion. All breath readings will be stored in the device and communicated to the proper authorities. Attempts to tamper or circumvent the device may also result in further penalties, such as revocation of the privilege to drive with the device.

Where Ignition Interlock Devices Are Installed In Washington DC

IID's are installed at designated ignition interlock service centers. The DUI offender is responsible to pay the cost of installation, as well as the monthly payments. Offenders who are unable to afford it may be able to petition the court to work out an alternative payment schedule.
